Partisan Observations

Unlocking insightful thoughts on today's politics

Marco Rubio: The future of the GOP or just another lackey?

The current Trump administration is one of the most chaotic and inconsistent political machines ever seen in America. Members of the Trump administration seem to come and go at the President’s leisure, which only further fuels the administration’s overall inconsistency. Marco Rubio however has survived and thrived under Trump, serving as one of his closest confidants and as our current secretary of state. Rubio’s relative normalness compared to the many controversies of other prominent Trump aligned politicians (Kash Patel, Pete Hegseth, Kristi Noem, etc.) has kept his head off of Trump’s chopping block, which has allowed him to consolidate himself in Trump’s administration. While Rubio does get involved in our partisan culture war from time to time, he seems to avoid figure heading any extremely partisan policies, a smart move for a politician trying to avoid negative media attention. Trump himself seems to favor Rubio as the two are often seen collaborating over political matters and even trading notes during press conferences.

As Rubio’s political power and influence grows his ambition seemingly has to, as whispers of a future presidential run have been heard from numerous sources, both in and outside of D.C.. Rubio has many of the qualities that the GOP seeks in their politicians, he has a wife and four kids, a strong history of supporting Republican values in Congress, and is generally white-passing despite his Cuban heritage. Rubio’s avoidance of extremely partisan politics has also protected him from much of the criticism anti-Trump Republicans have towards the hyper partisan nature of the current administration. By being Trump’s conventional Republican ‘straight man’ in comparison to his more theatrical peers, Rubio has gained the favor of his party, his president, and a great deal of MAGA voters while his coworkers face constant scrutiny from both the media and Trump himself. All of this is to say that Rubio is no longer just another one of Trump’s lackeys, but instead his consigliere and heir apparent. Whether Rubio would be a good president is a whole other matter, but I can only hope that in the future Rubio’s conventional and calm style of politics will help lower America’s high political temperature.
