Voter Information
In recent news the US department of justice is suing the state of Georgia over access to voter information. Intra government lawsuits are already very rare, and this legal battle between the federal government and Georgia’s government indicates some rising tension between the two. According to the lawsuit filed in Macon the Trump administration is suing Georgia due to “not turning over requested voter information”. The Trump administration has also filed similar lawsuits towards the states of Wisconsin, Illinois, and the District of Columbia. Notably all of these areas are democrat favored, which makes them a clear target for the current republican administration. I see this lawsuit as a direct attack against bipartisanship due to the bipartisan election committee’s decision not to give up voter information. The fact that both democrats and republicans stood up against the request, and are being collectively punished (Georgia is a very politically even state after all) shines a very poor look on the justice department.
Bipartisanship is necessary in order to keep unnecessary quarrels out of our government, but this aggressive legal shows that the current administration doesn’t place much value on the results of bipartisan decisions. Further questions have been raised about what the federal government needs this data for, but no clear answers have been given aside from a reassurance from the attorney general that the justice department’s interests were in the right place when making this decision. I’ll be doing a report of the results of this lawsuit and how it will affect Georgia as soon as a decision is made. That all being said, stay healthy and keep your eyes open!
