AI and Social Media
In today’s post I’ll be covering a bipartisan committee recently introduced by Georgia lawmakers. In 2025 states around the country have been setting up committees dedicated to passing laws that protect children from social media and AI usage. Obviously, this is important now more than ever before, with new forms of social media and AI programs being developed at a rapid pace. AI and social media are a generally bipartisan issue, although there are a few exceptions to that rule. This is because both AI and social media affect EVERYONE and their families regardless of political allegiances. Senator and co-chair of Georgia’s Senate Impact of social media and Artificial Intelligence on Children and Platform Privacy Protection Study CommitteeSally Harrell says that AI and social media “should be a congressional issue. It should be dealt with nationally. But Congress isn’t doing anything. They haven’t done anything to help our kids be safe online for almost 30 years.” Essentially what Sally is saying here is that states feel like they have to pass these laws due to congressional inaction regarding this massive issue.
Speaking of issues caused by AI and social media, there’s been many studies done that show a direct link between social media usage and mental health disorders. And AI has recently claimed the life of a teenager who “fell in love” with a virtual chat bot that encouraged him to commit suicide. This case was painful to even read about and shows the pitfalls of unregulated AI that people’s kids can fall into without them even knowing. Of course, many AI and social media giants are already giving pushback to these committees, likely due to possible profit loss and damage to their image that would come with regulatory laws. Personally, I am in full support of more AI and social media regulation. I see this case as no different as regulating something like asbestos, it’s a clear bipartisan issue that anybody who uses the internet or has loved ones that do should be in support of. We don’t know yet how far lawmakers will go with these regulatory laws but I can only hope that they make internet safer and more accessible for everyone. As always, keep yourself safe and do what you can to make the internet a safe space for everyone!
